Good dental hygiene is essential to maintaining good oral health. It involves team work, encompassing a strong home-care regime with regular visits to the dentist and hygienist. Dental hygienists are vital members of the dental team, who as well as thoroughly cleaning your teeth can provide advice on how to look after your mouth between appointments, minimising the chances of tooth decay and gum disease developing.
Castle Lane Dental Care has two dental hygienists, both of whom are passionate about oral health education for patients of all ages. They will work in partnership with you to help fulfil your need for thorough daily care.
We usually recommend you visit the hygienist every six months, although some patients may need to visit more frequently if you have a condition that needs to be monitored. You should always follow your hygienist or dentist's advice.
Your hygienist will thoroughly clean your teeth using special equipment and pastes, which is known as a scale and polish. This will remove all traces of plaque and tartar, even from areas that you find difficult to clean yourself. Professional tooth cleaning helps to prevent gum disease and tooth decay, both caused by plaque deposits.
Hygienists can also help to treat and manage gum disease, and can recommend the best techniques and products for you to clean your teeth at home. This may include advice on brushing technique and using special products such as interdental brushes or mouthwashes. They can also advise you on how dietary factors affect your oral health – a balanced diet without too much sugary or acidic food will help to keep your mouth healthy.
Although appointments with the hygienist are only available to private patients, they are highly beneficial to patients of all ages. Oral health education can be tailored to suit patients of all ages, and children can learn about the importance of looking after their teeth in a fun and engaging manner.
